Description
Pardon the timestamp. This was taken on my first digital camera, as it wheezed its last breaths.
This is a Janlynn Piece entitled, "Oriental Lady". It was completed in November of 2006, but was started when I was in high school. Probably somewhere in the 1999-2000 era.
On the left, near her fan arm, you can see what happens when you aren't extremely careful about washing your hands EVERY time you even think about the possibility of touching your stitching.
Thank God it wasn't white aida.
No matter how many times I washed it, I couldn't get the oils from my hands out of the fabric. My father absolutely loved this design, dirty marks and all, and it hangs in their Louisiana home.
Learn from my mistake, before you have a ruined piece. Please, wash your hands with regular, non-moisturizing, soap before you stitch. If you touch your face, hair, or anything that might possibly be oily, wash them again. You may not necessarily see the dirt on your hands, that will show up prominently on your stitching.
Don't use hand creams, or handle cosmetics, while stitching.
Tell me, have you ever learned a stitching lesson the hard way?

When I was a kid, I cross-stitched a Piglet, and because I couldn't count well, I used a pencil to trace outlines where colors were supposed to stop. I washed it, but you can still see the gray around the pattern.
